Alternator, Starter & Auto Electrical Repair in Garland, TX

A new battery won't help if the alternator isn't charging it — and a good alternator won't help if something is draining the battery overnight. Cruise Automobile in Garland tests the whole electrical system to find the real cause of dead batteries, dim lights, and no-starts.

Alternator & Electrical at Cruise Automobile in Garland, TX

A new battery won't help if the alternator isn't charging it — and a good alternator won't help if a parasitic draw is pulling the battery down overnight. We test the whole circuit.

Starters, alternators, wiring faults, and battery drains, all diagnosed before parts get ordered.

Signs of a failing alternator or electrical problem

  • Battery warning light on while driving
  • Headlights and dash lights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev
  • A battery that keeps going dead, even after it's replaced
  • Slow or labored cranking
  • A single click — or rapid clicking — when you turn the key
  • Whining or growling from the front of the engine
  • Burning rubber or hot electrical smell
  • Power windows, radio, or gauges acting strangely
  • Flickering lights or accessories that work intermittently

Battery, alternator, or starter? How we tell the difference

These three parts work as a team, and when one fails, it often looks like another. The battery stores energy to start the engine. The starter uses that energy to crank the engine. The alternator recharges the battery and powers the vehicle once it's running. A bad alternator kills batteries; a weak battery strains the starter; a dragging starter can make a good battery look bad.

We test each one separately: a load test on the battery, a cranking-voltage and current-draw test on the starter, and charging output and ripple tests on the alternator. We also check the cables, grounds, and connections, because a corroded ground strap can mimic almost any electrical failure — and it's a far cheaper fix.

Finding a parasitic battery drain

If your vehicle starts fine during the day but is dead after sitting overnight or over a weekend, something is drawing power with the key off. Common culprits include a glove box or trunk light that stays on, an aftermarket stereo or remote start, a stuck relay, or a module that won't go to sleep.

We measure the draw and isolate circuits one at a time until we find it. It takes patience, but it's the only way to stop replacing batteries.

Heat, batteries, and charging systems in Texas

Heat speeds up the chemical breakdown inside a battery, so North Texas batteries often wear out in three to four years. Under-hood temperatures in summer traffic also stress alternators and wiring insulation. A battery that's borderline in July will often fail on the first cold morning in winter, when the engine needs more power to crank.

We test the battery and charging system at every maintenance visit so you get a warning before you get stranded.

What to do if your car won't start

If the engine cranks but won't start, the problem is usually fuel, spark, or the security system — not the battery. If it clicks or does nothing, it's usually the battery, cables, or starter. If a jump start gets you going but the car dies again later, suspect the alternator. Either way, call us at (682) 246-3449. We can tell you whether it's worth trying a jump or whether the vehicle should be towed to our Garland shop.

Modern vehicles are more electrical than ever

Today's cars and trucks rely on electricity for far more than lights and the radio. Electronic throttle control, fuel injection, power steering, climate control, driver-assistance cameras and sensors, and start-stop systems all depend on steady voltage. A weak battery or charging system can cause warning lights, strange behavior from modules, and even shifting problems that look unrelated. Some newer vehicles also use battery-monitoring systems that need a new battery registered so the charging system manages it correctly. We handle those steps as part of the job.

Corrosion and loose connections

White or green crust on battery terminals, loose clamps, and corroded ground straps are some of the most common causes of starting and charging problems — and some of the cheapest to fix. Heat and age loosen connections over time, and a connection that looks fine can still have enough resistance to cause a no-start. We clean, tighten, and voltage-drop test the main connections before recommending any major part.

Start-stop systems and AGM batteries

Many newer vehicles shut the engine off at stoplights to save fuel and restart it when you lift off the brake. Those start-stop systems demand much more from the battery, so they usually use AGM or enhanced flooded batteries designed for repeated deep cycling. Installing a standard battery in their place can lead to warning messages, a start-stop system that stops working, and a battery that fails early. We match the replacement to what your vehicle was built with.

Alternator Repair FAQs

How long does an alternator last?+

Many last 80,000 to 150,000 miles, but heat, heavy electrical loads, and leaking oil or coolant can shorten that. Testing tells you where yours stands.

Can I drive with the battery light on?+

Only briefly. The vehicle is running on battery power alone, and once it's drained the engine will stall. Turn off accessories and head straight to a shop.

Why does my new battery keep dying?+

Usually a charging problem or a parasitic drain. Replacing the battery again won't fix either — testing the system will.

How long does an alternator replacement take?+

On many vehicles it's a same-day repair. Some engine layouts make access harder, and we'll give you a realistic time when we quote it.

Why does my car need a battery 'registration'?+

Some newer vehicles track battery age and adjust charging accordingly. Registering a new battery tells the system to charge it correctly, which helps it last.
